Kenya comes to the rescue of its sugar industry

In crisis, the Kenyan sugar sector could soon be offered a serious boost by the state. The office of President Uhuru Kenyatta announced on Monday 24 February that the government is going to privatise several state-owned sugar factories and raise taxes on imported sugar, all measures designed to protect the local industry. The news comes shortly after a study on the revival of the sector, pointing in particular to the lack of investment in the sector and recommending more taxes on imports, was sent to the Kenyan presidency, the Kenyatta office said. The details of these forthcoming announcements remain to be specified, as no information has yet been communicated.
